As a fitness and workout fanatic, you probably have your fair share of various shaker bottles. Big, small, insulated, non-insulated, wire whisk, plastic strainer – the list goes on and on. One thing is for sure, if you don’t take care of your shaker bottle, you’re going to be replacing them frequently. And because money doesn’t grow on trees, here are my top three shaker bottle care hacks that you need to know and use to extend the life of your shaker.
Tip #1: Never let your shaker sit after use
When you down a protein shake or pre-workout and let your shaker bottle sit, you're going to find the corners of your shaker bottle, as well as the lid, are going to start building up with whatever is leftover in your shaker. This creates a hardened crust that can be difficult to clean due to the size and shape of the shaker as well as the crevices in the lid.
One of the best shaker bottle care hacks I can give you is to always wash out your shaker bottle after each use. Even if you can’t use soap and water because you’re at the gym, at least give it a good rinse and get the residue out. Put some water in the shaker, screw the lid back on and give it a good shake to loosen everything up and then pour out the contents. This will help prevent any residue from building up in your shaker bottle and/or lid.
Tip #2: Fight the funk
Have you ever had the most amazing workout and on the way home from the gym decided to run some errands? You slam your protein shake and toss the shaker bottle on the floor behind your seat. It, unfortunately, rolls under your seat and you forget about it. Did I mention it’s summer and the temperature is hovering around 100? If this ever happened to you, you’re probably dry-heaving just reading this. Let’s just say the smell from your shaker after spending some time in the hot car unwashed is enough to make you want to burn your car to the ground.
There are a few shaker bottle care hacks you can use here. The first is to add some baking soda and vinegar to your empty shaker bottle. Toss on the lid but leave the cap open. Allow the shaker bottle to sit overnight and in the morning, dump it out and wash it with soap and hot water. This should do the trick and eliminate the funk coming from your shaker bottle.
The second of the shaker bottle care hacks you can try in this instance is to dump some damp coffee grounds in your shaker bottle, screw on the lid, close the cap, and let it sit overnight. The next morning all you need to do is dump out the coffee grounds and wash your shaker bottle with hot water and soap. I like to consider this a win-win because not only do you get an odor-free shaker but you get to drink a cup of coffee I order to get the damp grounds.
Tip #3: Store your shaker bottles properly
For starters, check to see if your shaker bottle is dishwasher safe. If so, use that convenience whenever possible to thoroughly clean out your shaker. Just be aware that some shakers and/or components may not be dishwasher safe.
That being said, once you wash your shaker bottle or pull it out of the dishwasher, make sure you are storing it properly. One would think they can simply toss the lid on and put the shaker bottle away until their next use but that’s not exactly ideal. Why? Because if your shaker bottle isn’t completely dry, odor and bacteria can form. And last I checked, adding harmful bacteria to your protein shake or pre-workout isn’t something you do to help build muscle.
So, to close out our shaker bottle care hacks, only store dry shaker bottles. Keep the lid off and the cap open to allow every nook and cranny to dry completely. When visibly dry, at that point put the lid on, close the cap, and store the shaker until you need it again.
